How can I maximize the benefits of my massage?
To maximize the benefits of your massage, try one or more of the following:
Drink lots of water (1 gallon over 24-hours is recommended); avoid strenuous activities for 24-hours; avoid caffeine and alcohol; stay relaxed; meditate; get plenty of sleep; practice deep breathing; do gentle yoga or stretching; take a warm bath with epsom salts or sea salts and essential oils; listen to soothing music; eat mostly organic fruits and vegetables; and practice other methods to help you stay calm and relaxed and to assist your body’s natural detoxification processes.
How often should I receive massage therapy?
Massage therapy is both a recuperative and preventative healthcare practice and part of a healthy lifestyle. And, while every-body needs a massage, each person will have their own preference for how often to receive massage therapy services. Some will receive massage once per week, or as often as possible. Others may only want to come in once every-other-week, once per month, or once every couple of months.
No matter how often you decide to receive massage therapy, it is best to find a regular routine and stick with it. Your body responds to regular cycles/rhythms. When you get into a regular routine, your body will begin to anticipate your next appointment and you will begin to relax even before you get on the table!
If your body is in good condition and you only need maintenance care and stress-relief, we recommend a 60-minute to 90-minute full-body massage session once every 4 to 6 weeks.
If you’re recovering from an injury, if you’re pregnant, or if you’re an athlete training for an upcoming sporting event, you may want to receive massage therapy more often, perhaps once every-other week.
For a particular area of concern, especially for an area of chronic or acute soft-tissue dysfunction and pain, we recommend a series of Neuromuscular Therapy massage sessions in close proximity, about once per week, until the problem is resolved (usually from 3 to 7 sessions), then returning to maintenance care.
What should I expect at my first visit?
On your first visit, you can expect to spend about 5 to 10 minutes completing a required client intake form and an initial consultation with your therapist.
Your client intake form will ask about your health and medical history. It is important that you answer all health and medical questions honestly and completely as this will help your therapist determine the appropriate therapeutic approach for your session. During you initial consultation, your therapist will talk with you about any concerns, expectations or desires you may have and plan the session around your unique goals.
Your first session is always a “getting to know you” session. Your therapist is becoming familiar with your unique body and needs, and you are becoming familiar with your therapist’s quality of touch and therapeutic approach.
It is extremely important to communicate openly with your therapist during your first and all subsequent sessions. If you feel uncomfortable for any reason (for example: the massage pressure is to light or too deep, you feel too cold or too hot, the music is too loud or too soft, etc.), speak up! Your therapist is getting to know you and your particular likes and dislikes. Communication will help your therapist to better serve you.
If you experience any pain, let your therapist know immediately so that the pressure and/or strokes can be adjusted to your comfort level. Your therapist can feel tension in your body, but cannot feel your pain response; therefore it is important that you communicate any pain sensations so that appropriate adjustments in treatment can be made.
How much time should I schedule?
On your first visit, we recommend that you schedule a longer session, if possible, in order to allow more time for questions you may have, any necessary discussions about your specific concerns, and an explanation of massage techniques before we start. First sessions usually take a little more time because you and your therapist are getting to know each other.
Generally, one hour is sufficient if you want a relaxation massage for improved circulation and stress relief; if you want a deep tissue massage and are in good physical shape; or if you want a Neuromuscular Therapy massage focused on a particular area.
If you want a full-body massage with extra attention focused on relieving specific problem areas, we recommend allowing 90-minutes for your session.
Are there any medical conditions that make massage inadvisable?
Yes. There are certain times when massage is contraindicated (should not be performed). Be sure to consult your physician before initiating a massage program if you have circulatory ailments (such as phlebitis), infectious disease, cancer, cardiac problems, contagious skin conditions or any inflamed or infected tissue.
You should inform your therapist of any health problems and medications that you are taking. For example: certain prescription drugs may cause you to bruise easily, or may dull your pain sensations, so the therapist needs to be aware in order to take extra precautions.
What if I’ve got a cold or if I'm experiencing flu-like symptoms, should I still come to my massage appointment?
No. You should never come to a massage appointment when you are sick, especially with a potentially contagious respiratory infection such as a cold or flu virus. Massage can sometimes make these conditions worse, and you will be putting the health of your therapist and other clients at risk. Please reschedule your appointment if you are not feeling well. Come back at a time when you know you will be well and there will be no chance for passing along any illness.
What if there are changes to my health information?
Your therapist will make every effort to check in with you at your subsequent massage sessions regarding your current health information. However, you are responsible for providing your therapist with updates to your medical profile, as needed, prior to all subsequent sessions.
What should I do if I experience discomfort or pain?
If you feel any discomfort or pain during the session, you should inform your therapist immediately.
It is likely that the therapist will find some areas of tenderness or pain. These tender or painful areas found in muscle and connective tissues indicate a dysfunction: usually trigger points, adhesions, an accumulation of toxins and metabolic waste, or lack of proper blood or lymph flow to the area.
If pain is experienced during a massage session, it should be a satisfying “hurts so good” kind of pain, never an “ouch” kind of pain. When pain is experienced, most often it is during a deep tissue or neuromuscular therapy massage, and the therapist will “work it out” using techniques that may require your participation and feedback. When releasing a trigger point, for example, your therapist may ask you to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10, and your feedback will help the therapist gauge how much pressure to apply to the area. Usually within three deep breaths, the trigger point is released. You will feel a melting or relaxing sensation and the pain will diminish or go away completely.
We highly recommend that you communicate with your massage therapist openly and honestly regarding any pain sensations and give feedback regarding pressure and technique so that you can have the best treatment to meet your needs in the moment.
What should I “do” during my massage?
We recommend that you focus on deep relaxation and breathing.
Your breath is powerful. Deep breathing oxygenates your blood, nourishes your cells, removes toxins, and releases stored tension. So, breathe deep…
… And, remember to exhale completely. When you hold onto your breath, you hold onto your tension. Let go.
Your massage session can be a time for meditation. During your massage, focus and become aware of your body, notice any sensations you are experiencing, perceive sounds and smells… you will find that the more fully you “let go” of your internal anxiety and “mind-chatter”, the more you will become aware of your body’s internal messages and its innate capacity for healing.
“Breathe into” areas of tension or pain (the “hurts-so-good” kind of pain). Use the power of your mind, and imagine the tension releasing and leaving your body with your breath as you exhale. Visualize. It is a powerful practice.
Sometimes, people prefer to talk with their therapist, and that’s okay too. Your level of social interaction is your choice. Just remember to tell your therapist when you are ready to stop talking and completely relax.
If you feel any discomfort or pain during the session, you should inform your therapist immediately.
What should I wear?
We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable, casual clothing to your massage appointments.
For fully-clothed neuromuscular therapy treatments, wearing comfortable clothing allows you to move freely and will not be distracting while you relax during your session.
For the graceful, flowing massage treatments utilizing massage lotion or cream, wearing casual clothing minimizes the risk of staining a valuable outfit you love. Although our massage lotion/cream products are recognized as being non-staining to fabric, the essential oils used in aromatherapy can be staining, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Remember that you can request a quick removal of any residue with moist hot towels at the end of your session.
We recommend that you wear little or no make-up, and remove all jewelry prior to your massage. We will provide a small table for you to place these things during your session, but we recommend that you leave these things at home, in your car, or stored in some other safe place in order to reduce the chances of your leaving them behind.
Do I need to remove all of my clothes?
No. Some clients stay completely dressed, some prefer to keep undergarments on, and some prefer to be nude. Please disrobe to your comfort level. If you choose to be in any way undressed, position yourself between the sheets on the massage table. Then, let the therapist know you are ready for your massage. We will adjust our massage techniques to suit your comfort and modesty. When unclothed, you will be professionally draped with a sheet or towel at all times.
Will the therapist be in the room while I undress?
No. Your therapist will leave the treatment room before you disrobe. You will never be unclothed in front of anyone. Your therapist will leave the room before you get undressed at the start of your session, and again before you get up from the massage table at the end of your session. The only exception to this is if you have a health condition which requires the therapist to assist you in undressing or dressing, and then only at your request.
At the beginning of your session, after you have undressed, you will want to get onto the massage table underneath the top sheet. Then, you can let your therapist know you are ready by saying, “Okay, I’m ready”. Your therapist will always check to make certain you are ready before entering the treatment room.
Once your session is complete, your therapist will leave the room. Relax and take a few deep breaths, allow yourself a moment to absorb the benefits of your treatment, and then slowly get up and get yourself dressed again. Once you are completely dressed, you may open the door to the room, letting your therapist know you are ready.
What if I am embarrassed about my body?
Massage is for every-body. Massage therapists are trained professionals who treat bodies in every shape and size – old and young – short and tall – big and small. Massage therapists treat people with a wide range of bodily experiences: those who have lived through accidents, suffered injuries or undergone surgeries; those with physical disabilities; and those who suffer from serious illness or disease. We are here to provide services that benefit your health and wellbeing, not to make judgments about appearance.
Do I have to be draped during my session?
Yes. To ensure your privacy, and for the comfort of both you and your massage therapist, clients are appropriately draped with a sheet or towel at all times during any unclothed massage session. Draping is in accordance with professional ethical standards for massage therapists.
What if my therapist talks too much?
If your therapist becomes too talkative, please let them know. Simply say, “I’d like to be quiet and relax now”, and your therapist will allow you to relax and meditate in silence.
What if I fall asleep?
Sometimes people become so relaxed they drift off for brief moments. Not to worry, your body is still receiving benefits from the massage.
Can you work on an isolated area?
Yes. Emery Lauten Meadows has trained in advanced rehabilitative techniques ideal for working on isolated areas, including Neuromuscular Therapy, Active Isolated Stretching, and Muscle Release TechniqueSM.
Can you make my pain go away in one session?
Yes. It sometimes happens, and it’s great when it does! But it depends upon the individual and the severity of the condition. It usually takes a series of sessions performed within a short period of time before the pain completely goes away. Soft-tissue pain and discomfort is most often due to a chronic condition or an acute injury, so it is hard to predict the number of sessions you may need. Most people get significant relief after one session, but they will usually get substantial or complete relief from pain within 3 to 7 sessions performed in close proximity. The reason the sessions are best performed in close proximity is because the therapist is working to “re-program” your muscle memory to ensure lasting results.
What should I expect after a massage?
Immediately after your massage session is complete, relax on the massage table for a few moments and allow the experience to completely sink in. Take a few deep breaths. Get up slowly from the massage table, rolling first to your side before rising gently to a sitting position. If necessary, you may wipe off any excess lotion or cream with a towel and get dressed. You may also use a client robe and take a shower before dressing, if you prefer.
You may experience many sensations after a massage session. You may feel relaxed and calm, invigorated, or euphoric. Many clients report that they sleep soundly and deeply after a massage.
You may feel a bit disoriented, so we recommend that you take a few moments to breathe, drink some water and re-orient yourself to the external environment before you drive your car.
Why should I drink extra water after a massage?
Massage releases toxins and cellular wastes that were trapped in tight tissues. Therefore, it is extremely important that you drink plenty of water in the next 24-hours after your massage session (we recommend 1 gallon of water over a 24-hour period). Drinking plenty of water will flush toxins out of your body and will help to increase the effectiveness of your massage treatment.
If you don’t drink enough water, you may experience the following negative effects:
• You may experience soreness.
• The toxins and cellular wastes may re-settle into your tissues, and you will not receive the full benefit of your massage.
• The toxins and cellular wastes may travel to your brain and cause a headache.
Will I be sore afterward?
You may experience soreness after a massage session, especially after a deep tissue/neuromuscular therapy massage. The soreness is similar to that experienced after a good workout and is a normal response, especially for those who have not had a massage or exercised in a while. It should only last for a day or two and afterward you should feel a significant improvement.
Drinking plenty of water after your massage helps to flush the released toxins out of your body and decreases the likelihood of experiencing soreness, which is often the result of toxins and cellular wastes re-settling into your tissues again.
Does the session length reflect “hands-on” time or total time of the visit?
Your session length includes both “hands-on” time as well as a few minutes for discussion before your treatment begins. It is important to discuss your focus areas, progress, and goals at the beginning of each session so that your therapist can tailor your treatment to meet your current needs and desires. Your therapist always makes every effort to give you all the "hands-on" time you expect and need for your session. In some cases, your therapist may allow a few moments at the end of your session for you to relax and absorb the benefits of your treatment, or to teach you techniques for self-care at home.
Reiki Questions
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese method of energetic bodywork that promotes balance, health and wholeness. Reiki is used primarily for stress reduction and relaxation. It is a therapeutic technique that gently assists people with relaxing into deeply meditative states which support the body’s innate capacity for healing stresses on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Reiki is also a method for clearing and balancing the body’s subtle energy systems. Reiki is an “energy technique” because it is based on the principle of Ki or “life force energy” flowing through the body, and the idea that blocks or stagnation of Ki result in various forms of mental, emotional and physical “dis-ease” (a concept also found in Chinese medicine). The idea is that Reiki helps us maintain or restore a healthy flow of ki, and healthy ki nourishes our physical body and helps to balance our mental and emotional energy.
What does the word “Reiki” mean?
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese characters Rei and Ki. Rei can be interpreted to mean “higher knowledge", “spiritual consciousness” or "Divine Wisdom". Ki means the same thing as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. Ki is “life energy”, “the vital life force”, “universal life force” or “the breath of life”. Reiki can be defined as “spiritually guided life-force energy". The word Reiki may also be translated as “Holy Spirit”.
Can Reiki cause harm?
No. Reiki can never cause harm because by its very nature it is pure and eternal loving, healing energy. Reiki practitioners do not attempt to manipulate or direct this energy, but are trained to simply sense the energy and act as a clear and open channel so that the Rei or Wisdom part of the energy can assess where the person most needs Ki (life-force-energy /the-breath-of-life) in order to clear energetic blocks and heal.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, deeply relaxing and meditative practice that is excellent at relieving stress. Reiki can help the brain reach Alpha and Theta wave states. Alpha states are deeply relaxing and stress-relieving. Theta states are especially helpful at allowing spontaneous healing and flashes of insight to occur. Reiki also cleanses and balances the energetic systems of the subtle body (i.e.: chakras, nadis, meridians) and assists with deepening self-knowledge, spiritual connection, and positive outlook on life. Reiki compliments other therapeutic techniques and medical treatments, and has been effective in helping many illnesses, both by enhancing the beneficial effects of medical treatments and relieving unpleasant side effects.
Reiki can:
• Assist the body in cleansing toxins
• Accelerate physical healing
• Balance the body’s subtle energy fields
• Help heal relationships
• Assist in manifesting goals
• Enhance creativity
• Assist with life transitions
• Help awaken Inner-Knowing and The Healer Within
• Support you in raising your consciousness to a more Awakened state
• Assist you in elevating your communications with others to the Higher-Self level
• Help you discern the appropriate next step on your spiritual path
• Assist in the process of spiritual transition
• Support you to align with your Divine Purpose
• Help a mother and child through pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum
What should I “do” during my Reiki session?
Your Reiki session is a time for deep relaxation and peaceful meditation. During your treatment, focus on and become aware of your body and your breath. Notice any tension you may be holding and let it go. Become aware of your breath – is it shallow? Does it feel constricted or is there a tightness or heaviness in your chest? Breathe into any tight, heavy or constricted areas. Expand your breath. Breathe fully into all parts of your body – yes, feel as if you are breathing into your toes, your fingers, and the top of your head. … Notice any and all sensations you are experiencing. Fully perceive sounds and smells around you… You will find that the more fully you “let go” of your internal anxiety and “mind-chatter” and focus on your body, the more you will become aware of your body’s internal messages and its innate capacity for healing. Reiki will help this process. Be open to receiving Reiki healing. Let go of all worry, tension, fear or anxiety. Trust in the process and in your innate capacity to receive loving Wisdom and life-force energy.
If you would like to be a more active participant in your healing, you can use the power of your imagination. Focus on the issue that you would like to heal and then as clearly as possible, visualize a symbol of what the issue looks like, feels like, smells, like, tastes like, sounds like… and where it might be located in your body. Then, during your Reiki treatment, imagine the issue dissolving, shrinking, evaporating, becoming infused with and surrounded by light, metamorphosing or in some other way transforming into something of goodness, love and light, or leaving your body to be transformed and healed by Spirit. You might imagine that it is being exhaled with each breath or that it is leaving your body through your fingertips and toes – whatever you imagine – feel it, see it, sense it leaving your body or transforming into something beautiful. Affirm and know that the issue is completely healed and give thanks for the healing (you may do this verbally or nonverbally). This is a powerful practice that you can also do for yourself at home whenever the need arises. Never underestimate the power of the mind, for it can be a great ally. Ask Reiki to assist you in your healing and know that it is done. Reiki will always assist you when you ask.
What if I have a specific issue I want to heal?
If you have a specific physical or emotional issue you wish to heal, you may want to discuss the issue with your Reiki therapist and ask for specific help. The Healing Attunement may then be performed with your special focus in mind. You may also choose to include an Aura Clearing in your session. The Aura Clearing used here is based on a Hawaiian technique combined with Reiki, and is the technique taught and practiced by William Lee Rand and the International Center for Reiki Training.
Your therapist may guide you to become a more active participant in your healing (see question above), which can be a very empowering experience, and can boost the power and effectiveness of your Reiki session. However, you choose whether you wish to become an active participant, or if you would prefer to relax and simply be open to breathing deeply and receiving. There is no right or wrong choice. Whatever feels right for you in the moment is for your greatest good. Trust and know that Reiki will assist you in your healing.
What is a “Healing Attunement”?
In the general Reiki community, one usually hears the word “attunement” when referring to the initiation process that allows one to become a Reiki Practitioner or Reiki Master. However, a special “Healing Attunement” process was developed by the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT). Because the healing attunements do not initiate a person into Reiki, they can be given to anyone and are especially useful prior to a regular Reiki treatment.
What is “Aura Clearing”?
Because the presence of negative psychic energy in the aura is often the cause of illness and dysfunction, The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) developed Aura Clearing, a Reiki technique for more quickly removing negative psychic energy. This highly effective process uses Reiki energy to empower the practitioner’s hands so that negative psychic energy within or around the body can be sensed, grasped, removed and sent up to the Light. This process is based on a Hawaiian shamanic technique combined with Reiki. The positive results of this process in healing and well-being are immediately apparent.
Is Reiki safe during pregnancy?
Yes, Reiki is safe during all stages of pregnancy. Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman's life, yet it’s fraught with tremendous physical, hormonal and emotional changes. Reiki helps support a woman through the challenges of pregnancy and the anxieties of impending motherhood, in order to help her fully experience the joy, confidence, and soulful bonding with her baby that she deserves during this miraculous time. Babies are happier and healthier when mommy feels balanced, positive, empowered and prepared to experience the miracle of childbirth.
Reiki during pregnancy can be used to address stress, anxiety, fear, depression, nausea, morning sickness, fatigue, tension, aches, pains and emotional upset. It can also be helpful for women who experienced a birth trauma (or other traumas) in the past, by helping to heal old emotional wounds and prepare the mother’s physical and energetic body to be clear and open for the birthing process.
After birth, Reiki can help bring balance to continuing hormonal changes and the roller-coaster ride of adjusting to a new baby. In general, moms have who used Reiki during and after pregnancy seem to have an easier time transitioning into motherhood and their babies also seem to more peacefully adjust to the outside world.
What are the Reiki Ideals?
The Reiki ideals (values, ethics) are basically: to spend time each day in some form of prayer or meditation, to invite happiness into your heart, to release anger, to let go of worry, to practice being filled with gratitude, to devote yourself lovingly to your work, and to be kind to all people. Obviously, practicing these principles every day will assist anyone to become a better person, and a better practitioner of the Usui System of Natural Healing (or Usui Reiki Ryoho).
These are the Reiki Ideals as communicated by the founder, Mikao Usui:
(This is the version of translation from The International Center for Reiki Training)
The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer,
Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for improvement of body and mind
Can anyone learn Reiki?
Yes! Reiki is a pure form of healing not dependent on individual talent or acquired ability. Reiki is simply passed on from teacher to student, and is easily learned by anyone.
Reiki is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. This process opens the energetic centers, especially the crown, heart, and palm chakras, allowing the person to become ‘fine-tuned’ to give and receive Reiki healing energy. Once you have received a Reiki attunement, you will be attuned to Reiki for the remainder of your life. It does not wear off and you can never lose it. Yet, while one attunement is all you need to be attuned to each ‘level’ of Reiki, experience has shown that it is beneficial to receive multiple Reiki attunements because additional attunements can help refine the Reiki energy one is channeling, increase the strength of the energy, help heal personal problems, bring clarity of mind, increase psychic sensitivity, and a generally raise your level of “Awakened” consciousness.

Is Reiki a religious practice?
No. Reiki is purely a healing method. However, your spiritual beliefs can enhance all forms of healing, including Reiki; and some people find that Reiki helps them heal by enhancing their spiritual beliefs! The idea of life-force energy flowing from practitioner to recipient is not unique to Reiki. Many types of modern and ancient energy healing methods are based on this concept; and spiritual thinkers and teachers across the ages and around the planet have written about this phenomenon. So, in a sense, Reiki is part of and connects us to this greater human spiritual experience. (If you are a Christian with concerns about Reiki, you may wish to visit www.christianreiki.org)
Is this Reiki stuff real?
Reiki is real. People all over the world experience Reiki every day. But Reiki is just that – a phenomenon that can only be known through experience. As far as I know, science has not yet discovered a way to prove that Reiki truly exists.
Why didn't I feel anything during my Reiki treatment?
Some people just don’t sense anything in particular "happening" when they first begin to receive Reiki treatments. Not to worry, Reiki is working; and you can rest assured that as you continue to work with Reiki, you will eventually sense Reiki - usually as gentle flowing sensations, tingling sensations, or heat/cold sensations. Reiki may simply need to spend some time gently removing the energetic blocks that are keeping your perception of the experience elusive. Sometimes, just feeling relaxed and peaceful is enough.
It is also good to know that Reiki follows the law of free will. Anyone can choose to reject Reiki energy, and Reiki can never be forced upon another person. All you have to do is feel, think or intend that you are closed to receiving Reiki and you will not receive it. So, if you recognize that you are actually closed to receiving Reiki, perhaps you might ask yourself: Why am I closed to receiving Reiki healing energy? If the answer brings up an issue that you would like to transform and heal, then perhaps you can ask Reiki to heal it during your next session.
